I found another solution and much easier for me:

<?php $TotalByWords = new NumberFormatter("en", NumberFormatter::SPELLOUT); $num = $invoice->invoice_total; list($int, $dec) = explode('.', $num); ?>

Total: <?php echo $TotalByWords->format($int) . " EUR " . $dec . " ct."; ?>
